A Dragon in Jurong by Nur Aida Sa’ad for Arts In Your Neighbourhood 2021 – A Fisherman’s Dream at Block 135 Jurong Gateway Rd, Singapore 600135
The artwork captures two important parts of Jurong’s culture and history – Jurong’s location in the 60s as a canning factory, and the Dragon Kiln – a process where pottery is fed into a brick “dragon belly” for burning Practice – still preserved today. Jurong’s range of activities over the years, from trade hub to an artistic playground is rich, passionate and unrelenting – like the fire of a dragon.

Left: Fair Feathered Friends by Adeline Tan for Arts In Your Neighbourhood 2021 – A Fisherman’s Dream at Block 133 Jurong Gateway Rd, Singapore 600133
The mural is a nod to Dr Goh Keng Swee’s vision of “a space where Singaporeans can escape from city life and relax with nature”, which is a little hole in the wall filled with plants and birds found in Jurong Bird Park, Asia’s largest bird park, known for its immersive walk-in aviaries. This mural depicts the park’s charming inhabitants – macaws, peacocks, toucans and flamingos, adding some colour to the surrounding area.

Right: The Sleeping Dragon by Phua Juan Yong for Arts In Your Neighbourhood 2021 – A Fisherman’s Dream at Block 133 Jurong Gateway Rd, Singapore 600133
During the 1940s to 1970s, there were more than 20 active dragon kilns in Singapore, but now there are only 2 left. Indigenous ancient Chinese called them sleeping dragons.
In the artwork, Dragon Kiln is remained as a creature native to Jurong’s historic mangroves and crocodile-infested rivers, often hidden deep in vegetation and swamps.
The artist wants to be a viewer of Jurong’s origins and appreciate the developments that have taken place over the years.
