Around the Jurong River

Jurong Lake was formed after the upstream dam was built to store water in 1971. The Jurong River appeared on early maps dating back to 1828 and was a landmark for many early settlers and villagers. After the dam was built, three artificial islands were formed, namely Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden.

The 11.3 hectare Chinese Garden (Yu Hua Yuan) was built from 1971 to 1975, imitating the classical royal architecture of northern China in the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

Japanese Garden

A joint project of the Singapore and Japanese governments, the Japanese Garden is also known by its Japanese name Seiwaen. It is based on the Japanese garden aesthetics of the Muromachi period (1336-1573) and the Azuchi–Momoyama period (1568-1603).

Through the motifs captured in each flag illustration, youth residents share what the neighborhood means to them while reflecting their strong community bonds.

Remembering the past, celebrating the present, and looking forward to the future in Taman Jurong by Slacsatu for “The Kang Ching Mural Project” at Block 339D Kang Ching Rd, Singapore 614339. The spray-painted murals illustrate the past, present and future of the community. Though common imageries and actual events, it captures the residents memories together and aspirations for a vibrant and collaborative future.

Exquisitely Us, Me and You (2017) by Terence Lin & Chai Chee Seam at Block 352 Kang Ching Rd, Singapore 610352. An interactive installation that encourages the visitor to swivel the panels to form humorous figures and a variety of outcomes. It was designed off portraits of the workshop participants as well as Taman Jurong’s flora and fauna that were interpreted as motifs.

**The Storyteller by Slacsatu (2017) for Arts in Your Neighbourhood**

Whale You Refill (2019) by Ernest Goh. This artwork is co-created by the artist, children and youths of Taman Jurong. Made from the post-consumer plastic bottles, it questions our relationship with plastic waste while serving as a drinking water fountain to encourage the reuse of plastic bottles.

“Our Hawker Centres – A Heritage & Art Project” is jointly organised by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and National Heritage Board (NHB), and in partnership with the National Arts Council (NAC) and Nippon Paint Singapore. The initiative aims to raise public awareness of the heritage and cultural value of Singapore’s hawker centres and the areas they are located in. It celebrates Singapore’s unique hawker culture and highlights the heritage of our neighbourhoods through incorporating art within existing hawker centres. “我们的小贩中心—一个遗产与艺术项目”由国家环境局 (NEA) 和国家遗产委员会 (NHB) 联合组织，并与国家艺术委员会 (NAC) 和新加坡立邦涂料合作。该倡议旨在提高公众对新加坡小贩中心及其所在地区的遗产和文化价值的认识。它通过将艺术融入现有的小贩中心来庆祝新加坡独特的小贩文化并突出我们社区的遗产。

Memories of Home (2015) by Guo Yixiu at Block 163 Yung Ping Road, Singapore 610163. The mosaic mural is based on the surrounding landscape of the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, an important memory in the Taman Jurong community. It presents a diverse perspective of the neighborhood, while reflecting on the individuality of the residents.

Verdant monsters & Free Robots Playground (2018) by RSCLS + SPAZ at Courtyard within Block 65 & 66 Yung Kuang Rd, Singapore 610063. The mural bring together urban characters inspired by past, present and possible future icons of Jurong in collaborative harmony, combining technology and existing elements within the community. It thoughtfully projects the forward-thinking mindset of the Taman Jurong community.

Magic Safari Wall (2014) by Chai Chee Seam at Block 158 Yung Loh Road, Singapore 610158. A collaborative artwork, actively co-created by residents, that illustrates animals in various states of movements, mimicking the vibrancy and active nature of the Taman Jurong community.
